Warm welcome to Tom Hunter

We are delighted to introduce Tom Hunter who has joined the team as the new General Manager, Social Services.  Tom officially started in the role on January 12, taking over from Judith McInerney who retired in November last year.

Originally from Auckland, Tom is husband to Letitia and proud father of two young children aged just 12 months and two years.

Tom’s extensive career in the social services sector has taken him across New Zealand and Australia.

He started his career with the Department of Corrections before moving into Paramedicine.

Since then he has had several leadership positions with HYPAR Group supporting young people at risk and Brisbane-based disability service provide Multicap, working with team of 80 and over 1000 clients.

Most recently, Tom served at Odyssey House Trust in Christchurch, a not-for-profit organisation which provides mental health and addiction services.

Tom said he was particularly drawn to the role at Family Works because of its strong focus on early intervention.

“[Early family experiences] are often where all the problems start,” he said.

“From my time in Corrections, it became clear many challenges clients face are rooted in their early years - broken homes, chaotic parenting, and adverse childhood experiences.

“At Odyssey House, we were often seen as the last stop. Here, there’s a real opportunity to support people before they reach that point.”

Tom said he also saw immense potential in the breadth of support PSS offered.

“The lane here is really big,” he said. “Addiction services can be very niche, whereas Family Works helps people across a wide range of needs.”

Tom was equally drawn to the organisation’s long‑standing legacy:

“You only earn that kind of reputation when many people care deeply and commit to making a difference over a long period of time… plus, you can’t beat the Southland weather.”

Tom is excited to get to know the team behind the work.

“I’m really looking forward to connecting with everyone who shares a passion for supporting our communities. Thank you for making me feel so welcome.”

Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Tom.
