From recycled to runway: wearable arts show expands for seniors across Southland

Southland’s senior community is being invited to get creative, transforming recycled materials into runway-ready garments for Enliven Southland’s Wearable Arts Enliven Style show at Bill Richardson Transport World this October.

First launched last year for residents and staff of Enliven Southland’s care homes, the avant-garde wearable arts show is expanding this year to invite entries from other aged care providers and services supporting older people across the region.

“If last year was anything to go by, this year’s Wearable Arts Enliven Style will be a spectacular showcase of imagination, community spirit, and talent,” Enliven Southland lifestyle team leader Rachel Cade said.

“After bursting at the seams last year, moving to a bigger venue means we can welcome even more entries and audience members to enjoy what promises to be a spectacular show.”

Last year was the first time the wearable arts show had been held for several years, and its revival proved popular among residents and staff alike. The 16 entries the event attracted were colourful, varied and hugely creative. It was so well received, it has now become an annual event highlight on the Enliven Southland calendar.

Mrs Cade said following the phenomenal success of last year’s show, she had received many enquiries from other care homes and community groups wanting to be involved, so the decision was made to expand the event and share the experience.

“We had such an amazing time last year and it brought so much joy to everyone that we wanted to provide an opportunity for the wider community to be part of something truly special. After launching, we received entries from multiple aged care providers and strong interest from the wider sector.”
The show was about not only about encouraging creativity, but also about sustainability and creating community connections.

“Wearable Arts Enliven Style is about more than what appears on stage. It’s about confidence, connection, and celebrating the talents of people across aged care.”

The theme for this year’s event is ‘Iconic Southland’. Entry categories include care home, community groups, people’s choice and open sections. Entries will be judged on wearability, construction, creativity and use of recycled/upcycled materials.

The Hits’ Craig Waddell will be MC with guest judges soon to be confirmed.

Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased from Family Works reception at 183 Spey Street, Invercargill or by emailing Rachel - rachel.cade@enlivensld.nz.
