Peacehaven’s Anderson Hall waitress Tania Fowell had two extra and eager pairs of hands to help serve lunch to the retirement village residents last week. (Wed, 19 Feb)
Ruru Specialist School students Connor Coats and Josiah Lamond (both 17) visit Peacehaven once a week to set the tables and serve the meals to the residents as part of their work experience.
The boys enjoyed the weekly experience.
“The people are nice,” Josiah said, his face lighting up.
Connor, who is non-verbal, gave a cheeky grin and a thumbs up.
Ruru Specialist School has had students completing work experience at Peacehaven since the start of 2023.
Ruru School work experience coordinator Maree Edwards said the students gained a myriad of skills when completing work experience.
The gains however were holistic, and the students were proud of the work they do and being actively involved in and contributing to the community, she said.
“Connor and Josiah have developed excellent work skills and very importantly, positive relationships with staff and clients at Peacehaven.
“We are so proud of how well they are doing.’
Peacehaven Retirement Village sales and administration coordinator Karen Harvey said providing the students with an opportunity for work experience was about inclusivity.
“…[and] providing opportunities for intergenerational connectivity. Some of the residents had grandchildren around the boys’ ages and enjoyed their visits.”
