Playing his part in club's rich history

Did you know we have a former Southland rugby rep in our midst?

Our very own Scott Findlay of Peacehaven Village represented Southland on two occasions.

The first time was in 1960 when he was playing for the Edendale rugby club. He finished in the number 8 jersey, which he said had been a childhood ambition because Southlander and former All Black number 8 Bill McCaw (1951 and 1953-54) had been his hero. Bill is a distant relation of All Black captain Richie McCaw.

However, Scott said the highlight of his rugby career was representing Southland for the second time in 1966 while playing for the Woodlands rugby club.

He was the first player from the Woodland’s club to become a Southland rep.

Scott played for Woodlands from 1961-1969 and is one of four surviving members of the 1961 Woodlands senior team.

This month the club commemorated its 125th year and Scott attended the celebrations where he enjoyed catching up with old friends and reminiscing about his rugby days.

“We shared a few stories…and a few lies.”
