Retreat to Celebrate Foster Carers

By PSS | Posted: Friday June 8, 2018

The Celebrating Carers Family Retreat was held at the YMCA’s Omaui Camp on the weekend of 3 March. Over fifty children and their carers attended the celebration. It is thanks to the ILT Foundation this weekend was possible, and a testament to why funding is so important.

A combination of family activities, sharing stories and opportunities to listen to guest speakers meant there was something for everyone.

Guest speakers Katie O’Connor and Rob Surtees took sessions in mindfulness, and healing and trauma respectively.

Andrea Greer worked with the teenagers focussing on regulating emotions and nurturing relationships.

Archery was a highlight for the older children, while the pedal cars and bouncy castle kept the younger children entertained.

Bush walks, beach swims and creative group activities filled the weekend.

Saturday evening wound down beside a fire pit, toasting marshmallows and watching fireworks light up the sky above the estuary at Omaui.

Thanks to the funding provided by the ILT Foundation for allowing families to attend at minimal cost and a host of generous ladies creating meals, and endless treats all weekend.

Feedback was overwhelmingly positive:

  • Best part was the whanaungatanga (sense of family with positive and meaningful relationships)
  • Had a good time, really appreciated the opportunity

With resounding success this year, it will again be considered for March 2019.
