Big and Little Buddies from the Invercargill Buddy Programme enjoyed a day in the Catlins as their mid-winter function, complete with tour commentary, museum visits and a chance to make a splash in the rock pools.

Fine weather, an excellent tour guide and a trip around the Catlins combined for a very popular mid-winter function for the Invercargill Buddy Programme.

Thirty-eight Big and Little Buddies enjoyed the day trip, which included a bus trip and visits to Catlins hot spots such as the Waipapa Museum, the Petrified Forest, Curio Bay, the Waikawa Museum and Niagara Falls.

With Big Buddy and renowned Southland historian Lloyd Esler on board, the group was privy to excellent commentary from the moment the bus left Invercargill to when it returned, making for a popular and educational element to the trip.

Buddy Programme Coordinator Rosanne Wybrow said she had received hugely positive feedback.

“They just loved it,” she said.

“The mid-winter function is a great chance to get the Big and Little Buddies together as a group and the feedback we’ve had has just been great – some who have been involved in the programme for up to 10 years have said it’s the best mid-winter function yet.”

“Everyone really enjoyed it and I think we all learned a lot as well, thanks to Lloyd.”
