Here Come the Brides

It was a case of Here Come the Brides at Vickery Court recently, with the Wedding Expo of Dresses Through the Ages proving a hit with residents and families alike.

From one dress that was almost 100 years old, to one yet to even make it down the aisle, the expo featured a historical look at styles from decades past and present, and more than 100 people gathered at the rest home to enjoy the show.

The event was co-ordinated by Vickery Court Activities Co-ordinators Kelly Roughan and Donna Cullen, who said the way the event was embraced by residents, their families (some travelled from as far away as Christchurch to be there) and staff, was amazing.

“I think seeing families together was one of the real highlights,” Kelly said.
“One of our resident’s daughters wore her dress in the parade and her family travelled to be here for it, my mum passed away last year and my daughter wore her dress which was so special, one of the girls wore the manager’s dress, and there was even a replica of one of Princess Diana’s dresses.”
“We were able to look at some of the funnier stories from weddings past, which was nice. It gave the whole day a really lively, fun feel.”

Volunteers from Front-Line Training Consultancy had actively supported the event, acting as models and helpers on the day.

Kelly said staff and residents had put in a lot of work before the expo; creating decorations, flowers, baking and decorating a wedding cake, and creating a presentation of photographs of residents and staff on their wedding days.

“No matter who you are, or when you were born, your wedding day is such a special moment in time, and it was so lovely to be able to share that here at Vickery Court,” Kelly said.
