The courtyard at Peacehaven’s secure dementia unit, Iona, has been given a makeover – an edible one.
While the space was previously well loved and visited by residents, now, thanks to an idea from Iona Team Leader Julie Worner, the generosity of a number of people and organisations, and the hard work of Enliven maintenance and parks staff, it has taken on more of a practical role.
The courtyard has been replanted with a range of edible plants, including grape vines, an apple tree, parsley, rosemary, and 50 strawberry plants; half donated by Enliven staff member Yvonne Goomes and the other by a resident’s family member. Lavender, well known for its calming properties, has also been planted.
Invercargill South Inner Wheel Club has very kindly donated a new wooden bench. A heavy table along with two long benches and two smaller benches have also been sourced, and a sun sail shade erected.
The courtyard is now ready for summer and no doubt residents and their families will enjoy the revitalised outdoor space, as well as the goods that come from it for many years to come, making for happier, healthier living.
